With the recent visit of Old Man Winter in our area, I began thinking about what it would be like to spend the winter up in the far north. I would greatly enjoy spending time, up around the Northwest Territories in northern Saskatchewan during the dead or winter, or at least I think I would. It would be an awesome experience to walk outside a remote cabin at night and have a bird’s eye view of the northern lights. I’ve listened to enough Johnny Horton songs to long to see the northern lights ‘running wild’ in the land of the midnight sun. Summer is short in the north country, the ice melt occurring in late May and by October, things begin to freeze again. Right now there is 3 foot of ice covering the lakes that I so much love fishing during the summer months.

Read moreLeft, Canton junior Georgia Crayton was one of six Van Zandt County athletes to be recognized for her play during the 2022 volleyball season by the Texas Sports Writers Association, earning Honorable Mention All-State honors as a setter. Competing coaches had previously recognized Crayton as the Setter of the Year in District 16-4A. Middle, Airianna Pickens, who had previously earned District 16-4A Offensive Player of the Year honors in a vote of competing coaches, capped her high school playing career by being named an Honorable Mention All-State performer by the TSWA. Pickens is committed to playing volleyball at Ranger College in Fall 2023. Right, Eaglette standout student-athlete Maddie Wilson continued to earn accolades for her performance during the 2022 volleyball season, earning both District 16-4A Defensive Player of the Year honors and a spot on the Class 4A Texas Sports Writers Association Honorable Mention All-State Team. Wilson is slated to play collegiately at Southeastern Oklahoma State.
